  • What exactly are pores?
  • + Whether big or small, these dots are actually hair follicle openings that sit right on top of a sebaceous gland (the gland that produces your skin’s oils).
  • Can you ACTUALLY shrink your pores?
  • + Okay so let me start with the somewhat bad news (we will get to the good soon)- the size of your pores are something you are born with… kind of. Babies of course don’t have pores but the ones you get when you get older were already decided for you.
  • What makes pores “big”
  • + If your skin is oily you may have larger pores, so work to prevent oily skin the best you can.
  • + Dead skin cells and sebum are what cause a pimple, and pimples can stretch out your pores.
  • + Sun damage is a known factor for increasing the size of your pores as it damages your skins structure, the collagen and elastic tissue. These factors give your skin strength, which is crucial to keeping your pores from getting larger.
  • + Popping pimples is a big no-no if you are dealing with large pore size. If you pop a pimple incorrectly you could damage the pore, making it larger in size. Ick!
  • Solutions
  • + Retinol products are chock full of vitamin A, which is a well known vitamin for fighting acne and slowing down the aging process. These products are known for cleaning out the pores and making them appear smaller.
  • + Be sure to wash your face daily and exfoliate one to two times a week.
  • + Try to keep your face make up and product free as much as you can.
  • + When you have to wear make up, wear a primer underneath so that you can mask your pores.
