Finish the Look: Buckle up!

street style: belts

Belts are a great way to add the perfect “finishing touch” to an outfit, and are always a chic accessory! Skinny belts, thick belts, woven belts, elastic belts, western belts- no matter what kind of belt you’re wearing, you must make sure you are doing it right! A belt worn wrong could make you look bigger than you are, or could shorten your torso (both two things that you do not want!).

  • Here are some helpful tips to guarantee you are rocking a belt to it’s fullest potential.
  • + Pick a location. Whether you wear your belt high up or down low all depends on your outfit & your body type. If you are wearing a boxy dress and want to show off your curves, wear your belt up high (under your bust). If you are looking to distract from your mid-section, than you should wear your belt around your hips.
  • + Pick a width. Wide or skinny, that is the question… and I have the answer. If you are short stick to wearing thinner belts so that your torso doesn’t appear stunted (as it would with a wide belt). If you are lean you can get away with wearing a thicker belt, it will add the illusion of curves to your straight frame!
  • + Choose a color. The color of your belt is truly up to you, but there are a few things you should know before you decide. Wearing a belt the same color as your top or dress will better define your waistline without drawing too much attention to it. A contrasting belt is always fun, but you must be extra careful with placement & width due to the fact your belt will become the central focus of your outfit.
  • + Layer it up. If you want to wear a belt, but don’t want to overly exaggerate any curves… simply layer! Pair a t-shirt with a cardigan and a thin belt over top to add an extra element of fun to your outfit! This way you can rock a belt without cinching your waist or drawing attention to your tummy.
  • + Stay comfy. If you aren’t used to wearing a belt, you may feel a bit restricted at first. Ease into belt wearing by starting with an elastic, or partially elastic, belt. The elastic will move and bend with you, which will make you feel more comfortable when donning your belted look.

fashion belts

  1. A studded belt always looks great with a pair of shorts, a plain white tee, and some summer sandals!
  2. Animal print belt with a little western flare in the buckle? I am totally in! Rock this beauty with a black dress at the waist and you are good to go!
  3. Wide belts are great, especially when worn with you favorite pair of boot-cut jeans (at-least that’s how I like to wear ‘em)!
  4. Overly long belts are being seen more and more, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. I may have to steal one from my boyfriends closet for now, but this one is one my fashion radar!
  5. Color-blocking is all the rage, so grab yourself this coral belt & pair it with either teal or purple for the perfect (and simplest) summer look!
  6. Can’t get enough… skinny belts! Grab a few skinnies in a variety of prints and you will have a fun belt for every occasion.
